Paul Gauguin, born on 7 June 1848 in Paris and died on 8 May 1903 in Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, is a postimpressionist painter. A leader of the École de Pont-Aven and an inspiration to the nabis, he is considered as one of the major French painters of the 19th century, and one of the most important precursors of impressionist art.
