A Viking (in Old Norse: Víkingr,) is an explorer, trader, looter but also Scandinavian pirate during a period extending from the eighth to the sixteenth century3, commonly called the "Age of the Vikings". By extension, the term in French is used to designate Scandinavian civilization. They are often called Normans, i.e. etymologically "men of the North", in the ancient bibliography.
